Tuesday Ben

I did only juices Mon and Tues but I ended up doing a lot of heavy yard work (cutting down a big tree with a hand saw) and I worked so hard on it for a couple hours straight that I felt it was wise to have a bit to eat afterward. So I had a midnight plate of rice and stir fry that was left over at the house I'm staying at.

By the way, this juice diet is nothing more than just being a vegetarian for a short time. I basically consume a bunch of fruit and veggies all mashed up all day long.

Tuesday Results--Amy

Mom-yes, salads and wraps are decieving aren't they? Salad's especially. I guess we have got it in our minds that salads are good for you but when you put dressing and toppings on the nutrition goes. It's a sad story. I guess we just need to stick with a side of raw veggies. Even cooked veggies aren't the best. When cooked too long some of the nutrients get cooked out. So it's best to just stick to raw so you know you are getting your nutrition. I guess as far as eating out goes just do what Anna said. Find out where you are going before and go to the website and decide what you are getting before hand so you are not questioning the calories. And some restaraunts have a low calorie or even WW menu.

For me I've been doing really well up until dinner time. I didn't have time to make dinner before Javen's game. And then Javen's game was forever long because no other teams were using the field so the kids just played longer. So we didn't get home til 8:15. I did not want to start dinner at that time so we had leftover spaghetti. Again, high in calories. But I do take comfort in the rest of my day and know it was just a big dinner. I did levels one and two of the Biggest Loser Sculpting workout. It's about a half hour long. So I guess all in all it wasn't a bad day. I could do better, though.

Tonight we make crunchy taco salad.

Yikes! - Mom is shocked

I found out that my lunch at red robin yesterday of a Chicken salad wrap and side salad cost me a whoppin' 994 calories! it also had 2335 gr of sodium and 21 gr. of sugar, which I didn't even consider at all , and which I should try to avoid. It brought my daily total to 1650. And I thought it was a good choice.

Mom here

Ben, 6 lbs is great, don't knock it even if it is through juice. When you start eating again, substitute real fruits and veg. for the juice when you get themunchies. I think that's partly what's helping me. I keep ready-cut-up veggies and ready-to-eat fruits in the frig. all the time. I think I have an advantage over the rest of you in living alone because I don't have to keep tempting foods in the house for the kids and I don't have to cook for anyone else- I try to have grandkid snacks available, but things that don't necessarily appeal to me.

Anna, with all the working out you're doing, I'm sure your body is pretty terrific shape, regardless of point overages. Do you find that eating right is harder in the summer when you're at home so much more? I sure do.

I went to the temple yesterday and we stopped for lunch on the way home at Red Robin. I had a chicken wrap and side salad instead of burger and fries. It was really good. - although I need to look up the wrap- I think it was probably more calories/points than I think.

Anna's Monday and Tuesday 6/28-29

I have not been doing well with my eating plan. Protein is high in calories. I don't really wanna get into it but I've been over by 5 and 7 points in the last two days and it's not all just cuz I've been eating more protein (scrambled eggs, fish, chicken, pork chops, etc.) I think cuz I was so focused for two straight weeks to be perfect in my eating I got tired of it and have had too many snacks the last few days. Maybe I can buckle down for the rest of the week.

Message To Mom

I meant to mention this last week when you posted, but forgot. Just wanting to let you know that "OMG" is internet lingo for using the lord's name in vain. I guess it's a gray area, but just wanted to make sure you knew so you don't use in in some Relief Society bulletin or something.

Ben Weigh In

I'm at 185 now, which is only losing 6 lbs from the time I completely stopped eating everything but juice (and a few cheats over the weekend). Most of that will probably come back with real food. What's crazy is that Mom lost about as much as me, AND I WASN"T EATING FOOD!!!!. This wight-losing is hard!

Monday Results--Amy

I guess I pretty much gave my results last night. But I did do my step aerobics again. So I guess that's all I have to report.
Here is what's on the menu tonight at the Reid's:

CRUNCY TACO SALAD:

4 Portions lean ground turkey (about 1 pound)
1 can (15oz) chili beans in chili sauce
5 cups romaine lettuce, chopped
1 cup salsa
1/2 cup reduced fat shredded cheese, shredded
1 tomato, diced
4 green onions, sliced
1/2 cup light sour cream
4 oz. baked tortilla chips

Directions:
1. Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and cook until no longer pink, about 5 minutes.
2. Stir in chili beans and simmer until heated through and slightly thickened, about 10 minutes.
3. Evenly divide lettuce onto 4 plates. Spoon a portion of turkey mixture over lettuce. Then top with salsa, cheddar cheese, tomato, green onion and sour cream.
4. Crumble about a fourth of the tortilla chips over each salad. Serve and enjoy!

Hope you like it!

Calorie Counting Help

Does anyone know how to count how many calories are in a meal you prepare from scratch? For example, I made spaghetti sauce tonight with tomatoe sauce, tomato paste, diced tomatoes, ground beef, etc. How do you know how many calories actually make it onto your plate after all that? (I know this dish isn't the healthiest, but there are some nights I just want to please the whole family, not just me and Dave and then cook for the boys also.)
But by dinner I had about 510 calories left. I may have gone over with that meal.

Ben Monday

I didn't weigh in cuz I had to be at the house at 7 am and working out just didn't happen. (the gym is where my scale is). I'll let you know tomorrow.
I guess my weekend turned into a break from the juice-y-juice kick. I at a little Fri, a little sat, and a little sunday. Very little, though. I'm back on Juice till Friday when Emily & I go out for our anniversary weekend thing.

Mom, I'm proud of your efforts! Great job. It's a slow process for sure, but think if you averaged 3 lds per week and kept that going till September 1, you will have lost 33 lbs. That's noticeable. Have you ever lifted a 30 lb weight? It's heavy. It's basically like giving Nikki a piggy back ride all your life and she finally gets off!

Sunday Results--Amy

Well, Yesterday didn't work out so good for me. Since I broke even on Friday night I guess yesterday was actually my cheat day. And boy was it! I won't go into details but it wasn't pretty. But back to business today for me! My next cheat day is purposely planned for this coming Sunday, the Fourth of July where I know bad food will be eaten I'm sure. I'll try my best to keep to the "diet" but won't feel bad if I cheat that day.

Mom, WOW! 4 pounds! That's awesome! 6 in two weeks! You rock! Keep it up!

Thur,Fri,Sat-Emily

Sorry for my lack of posts these last few days.
Here is a quick review.
Thursday I was under by 100 calories.
Friday I was over by a "Monsoon" burger and curly fries.
(I only had 300 left by dinner and then we hit a local hamburger joint, I have no idea the calorie count)
Sat. I was under by 277. I enjoyed a good old Subway sandwich for dinner too.

Quiche sounds so good. Maybe Paul will make some for us when we are there in August:)

I wouldn't feel too bad for Ben. I think he is enjoying his freedom right now. Right Ben?

Anna's Results: Week 2

Mom, 4 pounds is a lot in one week, puleeeeze.

I gained 2 frickin' pounds. I didn't go over my total points AND I earned 17 from working out during the week. So I don't really know why I gained. I have to assume that it is muscle or water. But it is frustrating.

I'm not counting points today and will be back on the bandwagon tomorrow.

Mom'w Sunday report

Lost 4 lbs. Feels like it should have been more. I'm going to have steak at FHE BBQ tonight- along with salad. I've only had veggies and a small bowl of fresh fruit so far; hope it won't put me over the top.

I've never thought Adam Sandler was even a little bit funny, especially when he does his 'funny voice' ; not so funny.

I talked to Paul yesterday; he's supportive of the blog but not likely to be a very regular participant. Says he'll get on soon. Every Friday night he and his friend/co-worker Dana each make a quiche and they share/swap on Friday for lunch. Paul says he's become a pretty good quiche cook and maybe will offer it as a Christmas brunch alternative to breakfast brick.

Saturday and Weigh in Results--Amy

My Saturday was really well. I didn't count again because I know my meals were exactly the same until dinner when I had a half a subway sandwich on flat bread. The chart said it was 350 Cals. But I'm sure it's more than that when you add stuff. I don't add a lot. Just cheese, tomatoes and lettuce and teeny weeny bit of ranch. So I think I'm good to go.
I weighed myself today and since everyone knows my weight now I was 136 point something then I weighed again a couple minutes later and it was 137. So I don't know. I think I might have lost a pound. I have been at this weight before though in the last few months. I think I have to do this for a long time before I see results. But I won't give up yet. I already can't wait to weigh in next week.

Anna Reports on Saturday...

Goobers!? I can see how that juice diet is helping curb your cravings, Ben! ;)

Well I am nervous about weighing in tomorrow because I did a sneak peek a couple of times this week and it indicates a gain. I'll save that story for tomorrow.

Increasing my protein is definitely hard to do AND stay in my points budget. I did my grocery shopping today and got ground turkey instead of beef and I bought The Other White Meat as I read that it is lower in calories than chicken and higher in protein so I'm giving the old Pork a chance...PORKCHOPS AND APPLESAUCE!

I went over my points today with Little Caesar's but for this whole week I didn't use all of my 35 weekly points AND I earned 17 from working out so according to the numbers I SHOULD be dropping...

Ben, thanks for the tip on Grown Ups...I won't waste my money and had no intention of showing it to any of your nephews. But you went all by your lonesome? That sounds so sad.

Ben - Sorry For the Multiple Posts

In case anyone was worried about my junk food binge, I decided to chase it down with some real food. I had 3 small ham & Cheese croissant sandwiches at a reception today. I felt it was better to give myslef something real instead of just junk. But, I'm back on the Juice again for the week.

Movie Review "Grown Ups". I'm not sure why people think Adam Sandler is funny (he was one of the directors). It was just so full of basic humor; stuff like singing on a rope swing and hitting a tree, farting, getting hit in the crotch, etc. There were many times when I could predict exactly what was going to happen in a scene from the first few seconds of it. They all line up to to a zip line into a pool, but the zip line is attached to a building. Of course, the 'bad guy' ends up hitting the wall and is in a full body cast. Hilarious! What's most awkward in the movie is that they're trying too hard to make these 5 friends come off as the classic fun loving, razzing, back-slapping, bunch of old buddies. It comes off as forced. Not that I expected much, but the acting is just embarrassing - especially Chris Rock and ALL of the child actors.

Maybe a good video rental. It was pretty tame, content wise, but I still wouldn't recommend it for all my little nephews.

Calm Down

Ok, Everyone can calm down and not worry that I'll be the next Kristen Hollman. I'm not obsessed. That particular workout is about an hour. You warm up, do step aerobics for about 35 mintues, then you cool down and then there is an ab workout at the end. I don't know how it works out but when I look at the clock it's an hour later. So I'm sure I didn't burn exactly 600 calories, but somewhere in that area. And I'm a sweater. (not the warm kind you wear in the winter) I sweat more than the average person I think. When I run with my friends I run the same amount of time but sweat way more. Also, I only do that workout on days that I'm supposed to do cardio and I can't go running. I can't go running much in the summer time because Javen and Jaxon are home. So I do that workout. I would run for an hour, too. So it's really no different. So no one should worry about me. Just wanted to clear that up.

Ben--How was Grown Ups? Looks funny but I heard it got really bad reviews. I'll see it anyway.

I also worked out

Ben here. Forgot to mention that Friday night a did the bike for almost an hour. I burned 400 cal (if you can believe those machines). Since everyone's talking about sweat, I'll say I did have more than normal.

Ben Friday - The Flesh is Weak

Amy - I'm with Mom on worrying you're going to be the next Kristin Holman. Running herself right out of her family and the church. On the other hand, it can be a very nice hobby if kept in balance.

Mom- You're right on many points about the juice-diet. It's certainly temporary but I'm an extremist, that's how I roll. I do have some justifications though.
This is actually something doctors recommend for various reasons (heals or prevents certain diseases, release pent-up toxins in fat, cleanses colon, etc) I don't really buy into it all 100%, BUT, I'm looking at it as a way to really kick start a diet. It is great for breaking your "addictions" to things like snacks, just eating for eating sake, heavy foods, etc. With the juices, I'm consuming almost every kind of fruit and vegetable imaginable and having nothing bad.

OK, so I think I really let you all down last night. I watched a movie by myself (Grown Ups) and decided to give my body a little something to chew on for the first time in 4 days. I decided that it would be good for my digestive system to have some solids to work on for a change. Oh, and I also was confronted with the smell of movie popcorn on the way in. So, as Amy says "I did eat". I don't feel bad about it personally, because I'm not convinced that having NO solids is a great idea. Anyway, I'm back on the wagon now with the juices. I just took a 2 hour break.
Did I mention I also had "Goobers". Looking back on it, I really screwed up a good opportunity. I took a break to have real food for one time in the whole week and what did I ingest? Movie popcorn and Goobers. Great choice, Ben!

Friday's Report--Amy

First of all, there is nothing wrong with being "verbose". I like to read everyone's entry's so the longer the better for me.

I was doing REALLY good yesterday with my eating. I was having a harder time staying full though. I was eating good healthy snacks to combat it, too. But then Dave and I went out to dinner with our Outback giftcard and instead of ordering their lower calorie meals like I ALMOST did. The waiter even had it written down on his paper. But when he said my two sides had to be both vegetables, one being green beans, I changed my mind and splurged on my usual steak with veggies and mashed potatoes. I came home and looked up the calories. The website didn't have my exact meal. I got a six ounce and they only had a 9 oz. on there. But I think my whole meal was about 1300 calories! YIKES! And by 10 I was hungry again! What's that about!? So I made that my cheat day. So that just means I have to be really, really good for a whole week now. I CAN DO IT!!
I also did that same step aerobics workout. And it probably really isn't burning 600 calories. I did exercise for 60 minutes but if you think about the warm up and the cool down and the ab work out part then it may not work out to 600 calories. But somewhere in that area anyway. So who knows? So IF I did burn 600 really then I might have broke even for calories. I had 716 cals left to use by dinner time.

Mom--Once you've been exercising for a while sweating hard for a long time isn't so hard. I mean it's hard while you're doing it I guess and sweat is dripping all over the place. But after a while you're breathing evens out and then the sweat is just sweat. Bring a towel and wipe off as you go. Or use your shirt. That's what I do. And then when you're done, you feel really good.

Can't wait to weigh in tomorrow!

Friday 6/25...Anna

My workout this morning was a sweaty spectacle. I walked "uphill" on a treadmill for 30 min and dropped more sweat than a school's got books. Seriously it was disgusting and awesome at the same time. After that I did a bunch of upper body weights and my whole lower body is crying from yesterday's visit with Mitch.

I took the boys to the water slides today and brought a 10 year old girl from church with us who is accustomed to eating fast food after her trips to the water slides so I decided what the heck why not and we spent some time at McD's. :( I started strong with just a snack wrap but...well...one thing led to another. With the workout earning 4 points and my weak moments today I am estimating at going over by a few points. Still not a lot to worry about cuz I have worked out 4 times and have not used my weekly points. I still think my weight will go up this Sunday though. No matter how often they say that muscle weighs more than fat it just doesn't help when you see that number go up.

Mom Chimes in Again

OMG! You are all such bloggin' fools. I had no idea this was a daily event; I was just planning to check in on Sundays, but as Amy pointed out, I've been sitting in front of this bloomin' screen for 45 minutes! Now that I'm done with school I'll be more inclined to get on more often.

I've been doing so much better since we started this thing than in the previous few months when I kind of threw caution to the wind and did what felt good. No more of that crap. I usually come in right on the cal. count or a little under. Can't wait to weigh in Sunday. It better be good news or I may sink into a blue funk.

Ben, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?! I can't see where drinking just juice is good for anybody anytime, or any other diet that excludes entire food groups. Where's the nutritional balance? How do you get your protein?
1000-1400 calories isn't enough for you. This is yo mama speaking.

Anna: a personal trainer? Oooh la la! Movin' on up to the East side. 1300 cal. seems extremely low, considering you don't really need to lose very much.

Here's my personal quote of the day: extremes in diet approaches don't bring lasting results. Common sense goes a long way.

Ben and Emily: I can't believe I forgot your anniversary! I'm truly a neglectful mom. I also forgot to call Luke on his birthday. Having these things on a calendar doesn't help. I guess it might work if I read the calendar once in a while.

Amy: How can you do sweaty hard exercise for a whole hour? Be careful you don't start going down the Kristin Holman road.

The problem I've always faced is that food is much more than a way to sustain life. It tastes good, is a social activity sometimes and It's an enjoyable activity, even something to look forward to. I may have some sort of oral fixation; needing to have something in my mouth. Maybe my mom took away the pacifier too soon.

I promise not to be this wordy ( don't want to overuse the' verbose' vocabulary word). I'll stay tuned in more often. I really like the communication flying back and forth; kind of fun. I'm going to see Paul tomorrow and encourage him to hop on the blog wagon.

Thursday--Amy

Ditto that about the Return of Anna.
And mom---Just one more bit of advice. At least read the blog a couple times a week so that when you do sit down to do it on the weekend you're not trying to catch up on all the posts from us all week. You don't like being in front of the computer for long periods of time, but not reading all week will put you in front if it longer when you do sit down to do it. Just sayin...... and P.S. Not all the blogs from this week are on this page. You need to go back to older posts to read them all.

Ok, for me I did ok until about 10 when I was starving! I have a 90 calorie dairy free soy chocolate thing from Trader Joes. That put me over about 40 calories. Over 1550 that is. Anna, I don't know how you will pull off 1300 cals. If you can, tell me what you are eating and I'll "echo" it! (notice the use of the word ECHO, like my blog name) Also, I took the boys and their cousin to see Toy Story 3 yesterday and Jessica gave me a pack of M&M's to eat. I was tempted and I did eat. They were 240 calories total. If I hadn't given in I would have been fine. Lesson learned I guess. I'm sure I'll give in again, though.
I did a 20 minute workout from Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred. And boy did I sweat! I think I sweat more with that than I did with P90X!
Today my problem is I didn't get up and go running by 6 a.m. so now can't go because the boys are home. I guess it's aerobics again.

Ben Thursday

Juice'd it up. No big whop. It's an easy diet cuz you can consume as much as you want (just juices).

I'm so glad I forced Anna out from her hiding place. Good post.

I did a relatively low impact stationary bike at the gym this morning. Burned 200 calories in 20 minutes. So, if you extrapolate (look it up) that into 60 minutes, one could see how Amy might burn 600 cal. Just saying....

Back By Popular Demand!: Anna Reporting Results for Thursday 6/24

Alright Alright...here I am. :) I used all of my points today, no more, no less.

Today I had a session with my personal trainer, yep that's right...my personal trainer cuz that's how I roll, at the gym today. He (his name is Mitch) said I should only be eating 1300 calories a day! ugh...not sure how that translates in WW language really. And he kind of poo-poo'd WW too. I see his point: I COULD eat 22 weight watchers cookies every day (1 pt each) and a few Pepsi Ones and still come in on target with points...but we're all smarter than THAT! I'm currently working on increasing my protein intake...I of course will keep you posted on that.

Other than that, Mitch worked me really hard, to a point of sweaty embarrassment. Side note, he ripped on me today for coming to the gym with eye make up and earrings on...I'm such a prissy client I guess. Anyhoo I suspect my weight will undulate (look it up) with the training as I should be building muscle which as we all know weighs more than fat but of course, as we all ALSO know, muscle burns the fat (even when you're sleeping! awesome) so lowering my body fat % truly is the goal. I just don't know if I'll make my goal weight cuz I'll be so ripped and carved, you know? It's tough. On the bright side I should be able to throw a monster truck tire across a room by the end of the summer.

Wednesday-Emily

Hey everyone and Happy Anniversary Ben! We have never been apart for our anniversary. When he comes up next weekend we have a getaway planned. We are going to hit San Francisco for two nights and leave the kids behind with my sister and mom. We might not be counting calories that weekend, but we will see. Maybe we will try to be strict one of the days.

I checked my calories and again I am under by 24 calories. That is what I had the day before. Seems a little weird. I mean, I eat similar foods during the day, but that is ridiculous.
Today will be different. We hit Taco Bell and I ordered a Fresco Taco (160 calories) , which we didn't get. I guess they didn't get it in the order. So, I finished off Brady's quesadilla (490 calories!) and Nikkis taco (236 calories). I ate about half of each and though it was good to many calories were wasted on such little food.

If you ever hit Taco Bell the Fresco menu is pretty good. It is their lite menu. You can order tacos and burritos and they are 20-100 calories less then the reg. tacos and burritos. I would just eat it right away or it gets soggy.

Sorry you can't do the Fiber One bars Amy. Maybe you can save them for when Dave is at camp!
Love you Ben!

Ben Wednesday

Anna, we miss hearing your 'voice'!

I'm on Day 3 of Juice-Only. Weighed in this morning at 4 lbs lower than Monday morning! Shaping up to be a good week. So far no side effects other than a desire to eat real food. My energy level is pretty normal, certainly no worse than normal.

Wednesday's Results for Anna and Amy

Hello there!
Anna's Results for Wednesday--she said she had a close one to almost going over her points. She had five points left by dinner time so she made a healthy dinner called Spaghetti Squash. I asked her for the recipe and she said it's not very good it's just very low on calories, it's mostly just veggies. (Zero WW points) That shows me that she is very dedicated to reaching her goals! Good job!

Amy--I had a heavier dinner last night but still managed to come in at 1535 calories. That's just under my 1550 MAX for the day. I can have between 1200-1550 a day. It's all thanks to having breakfast burrito's for dinner. They came in at around 600 calories. Oops.
I aslo went running for about 45 minutes. I put in that I ran an 11 minute mile pace and it said I burned 405 calories.
One more thing. Something I found interesting. All week I've been having 1/2 a cup of grape nuts, 1/2 cup skim milk and 1/4 cup raisins for breakfast. It's' 370 calories. Today I had 1/2 cup Quaker Natural Granola (with raisins in it already) 1/2 cup of skim milk and a fruit salad that had 1/2 bananan, 1/2 nectarine, about 10 grapes, 3 strawberries. This whole breakfast was 356 calories! Less than my one little bowl of grape nuts w/ raisins! I was able to eat a lot more with fewer calories! Who knew!

Tuesday-Emily

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will actually not subtract the calories I earn from exercise. Mainly because it will be too difficult to calculate how many I have lost during exercise. I looked up two calorie burning calculators and they both gave me different results that were way off. The bike I used on Monday said I burned 270, but it didn't ask for my weight. So, who knows.
Anyways, yesterday was ok for me. Not as good as I originally thought. I forgot about my snack before bed. So I was under but, only by 24 calories.

So, I wasn't too excited that Ben was doing the juice diet, but he was persistent. At least he is having juice. There is a similar diet, but it is just lemon water and pepper for 12 days. They say it is more of a cleanse, but people also use it to loose weight.

It is 9 pm and I can't be sure I won't have anymore snacks so I guess I won't post Wednesday's calories till tomorrow.

Snack idea: Fiber One bars. They are pretty good. They are 140 calories, 4 fat grams, and 9 dietary fiber grams. Isn't that pretty good for WW? I like the Oats and Chocolate.

Well, good night.

Ben's Tuesday

I just wanted to say that I probably won't be reporting calories because it's all juice. Still probably 1,000 - 1,400 calories a day actually, but I know I won't really be going over at all. I'll just chime in with my experiences with it.

I'm on Day 2 of it and so far, no big pains or anything.

Tuesday's Results

Here is what I have:

Anna went over by 4 WW points but earned 4 through exercise. So another successful day for her.

Amy didn't count the exact calories but ate pretty much the same thing as the day before but a different dinner. Still low on calories and from the same cookbook I use all the time. (Eating for Life) So I'm pretty sure I came in under again. I also did about 30 minutes of The Biggest Loser Sculpting DVD. It's a strength training one. Worked up a good sweat.

That's all folks! Keep on Keepin' on! (that's from Ellen)

Also, Ben--I would be inerested in doing that fast. Dave goes to Scout Camp the middle of July and that would be a good time to do that. Although that is when Anna will be here. Hmmmm....I'll look at your links and check it out. Good luck with it!

I put a comment on Emily's in response to my exercise. Please read and help if you can.

Tuesday - Ben

In case anyone didn't see, Anna posted a comment to the last blog (just making sure everyone checks for comments).

OK, I'm going rogue here. I decided to start a "juice fast" today that will last for an extended period of time. I know I may get some flack for 'crash dieting' or whatever, but I do have my reasons.
1. Weight Loss, of course.
2. Was wanting to do some kind of 'cleanse' but don't want to do that extreme right now
3. Emily gone for 14 days, so good time to not have to worry about meals
4. Excited about saving money on lunches and dinners!

I plan to keep this going till the 4th of July.

Here's some links for anyone who wants to look into this. I'm just providing this link mainly so Mom won't think I'm going to keel over.

Monday-Emily

Wow Amy, 600 calories! That is impressive and I was feeling good about my 270.

Yesterday was a really good day. I was under by 500 calories, but that is also because I added 270 with the calories lost from cycle.
Ben suggested that I not adjust my daily calorie count with how many I earn from exercise. It seems that if I earned extra calories from exercise that I should be given extra calories for the day. I thought I would ask you all and ask what you do? Just wondering if I should or not add extra calories from exercise.

My sister and her in-laws also happen to be doing the same thing we are so that has been really helpful. Our meals have been pretty low on calories.

Amy, should I give you my calories for tomorrow?

Monday's Results

I have results from myself and Anna

Anna said she used all her points. Didn't sound like she went over or under so that is great!

If I added my calories correctly then I came in about 150 under. It's hard for me to know exactly how many calories are in my dinners if I make it from scratch, you know? I made that chicken pomodoro, but found the calorie content on the web and I don't know exactly how big a portion is supposed to be. But either way I think it was a good day for me!
Plus I burned 600 calories doing step aerobics for 60 minutes.

Nice Raquel Welch Quote, Amy. Try These on For Size (this is Ben, Mom)

You don't realize how strong a person really is until you see them at their weakest moment.
-Unknown

You have to stay in shape. My grandmother, she started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 today and we don't know where the hell she is.
-Ellen Degeneres

Dinner at the Reid's

Here is my recipe for the week. It's called Chicken Pomodoro and it's what we ate tonight.

Servings: 4

Prep. Time 30 Minutes

Ingredients:

4 Portions spaghetti (about 8 oz uncooked) *we use whole wheat
I know the picture isn't spaghettie, but it's the only picture I could find.

2 egg whites

4 tsp. Mrs. Dash Tomato-Basil-Garlic Seasoning

1/4 Cup reduced-fat Parmesan Cheese, grated

4 portions chicken breast (about 1 lb)

2 Tbsp. olive oil

3 tomatoes, diced (or one 15-oz can)

1 green bell pepper, sliced

1 yellow bell pepper, sliced

3/4 tsp. Italian seasoning

4 Tbsp. red wine (or chicken broth)

Directions:

1) Prepare Spaghetti according to package directions

2) In a medim mixing bowl, lightly beat the egg whites. In a pie plate, combine the Mrs. Dash seasoning and Paremsean cheese.

3)Dip chicken in egg whites then into the seasoned Parmesean, coating both sides.

4) Heat olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place chicken breasts in skillet; cover and cook for about 6 mins; turn and cook for 6 more mins. until no longer pink in the center. Transfer the cooked chicken breasts to a plate, cover with foil to keep warm.

5)Add tomatoes and bell peppers to skillet and saute over medium heat until the peppers begin to soften, approximately 3 mins. Stir in Italian seasoning and red wine or broth, continue to cook for 2 mins.

6) Add Pasta to the skillet w/ sauteed tomatoes and peppers; mix gently.

7) Slice cooked chicken. Divide pasta mixture into four portions, top with a portion of sliced chicken, serve and enjoy!

Quote of the Day--Amy

I was watching Oprah while folding laundry today and she had on Raquel Welch. She wrote a book on aging and in it she said something that I felt I wanted to post on here. The quote was longer on the show, but this was all I could find online:

She called aging gracefully a game that women might as well decide to play. The alternative being to bow out and be spectators. Welch said, 'Sitting around doing nothing is far from the best option. Just as you maintain your home, your car, your garden, you should look after your greatest gift: your body.'

I hope we can all take something from that.

Good luck tomorrow!

Weekend-Emily

Sorry for my late reply. Like Ben said we came up to my sister's this weekend.
Friday I was under by 60 calories which I was very proud of because we drove up that day. You know how it goes with road trips and snacks. We missed our usual pit stop with all the good stations and fast food joints so that helped. We stopped at the next exit and I got a turkey sandwich at a gas station (Sounds gross, but actually was very fresh).

Saturday I was doing pretty good until Claim Jumper. I got the rotisserie chicken, veggies, and their fried, cheesy potato cakes. These bad boys cost me 700 calories alone and then the chicken ended up being 600 calories. I also had a cornbread muffin that I couldn't find the calories on, but their blueberry muffin is 330. So, I ended up making this a free day. I estimate that my dinner alone was 1800!! We finished our meals off by sharing a chocolate chip calzone! So good!

Yesterday was really good. I was under by 188 calories.

Today is off to a good start. I hit the gym and did a cycle class for 45 mins gaining myself 270 calories.

A good snack I tried is the Turkey Jerky at Trader Joes. It is pretty good and low on calories.
I also like chicken salad. I just do the chicken from the can and light mayo. I like it on bread and crackers.

Have a good Monday!

Announcing...Ben

How's that Mom?
So, I gained 1 lb! How do you like that. I was really sacrificing for 5 days, then this weekend came and I blew it all. I just went way off the wagon - burger and fries for luch on Saturday, followed by dinner at Claim Jumper! Road trip included lots of nuts, chips, etc. Oh well, I'm really motivated to make this week count!

We weren't planning on gutting the place, it just slowly became evident that it was the only way to go given all the changes we needed to make. Good thing we decided to rip the old walls off cuz we found a lot of mold inside there! So glad we discovered that!

Sunday--Amy

I had my "Cheat" day yesterday so I didn't really count calories. But I know I went way over. I think I will be more strict this week and do better and see if it makes a difference in any way. I haven't been able to move away from the weight I am at right now for more than a year. I only want to lose ten pounds and they are the very hardest to lose.

Anna and Mom, way to go on losing weight! That's awesome and very encouraging! I hope that keeps you motivated to keep going. I wish I was there with you. We'll see next Sunday. Also, my weight fluctuates SOOO much on any given day it's hard to tell if I've lost anything sometimes. For example, my weight on Thursday was 135 (five away from my goal) and then the next it was 137. (I'm usually at around 140) I know I didn't gain two pounds in one day because I was really watching the caloreis those days and stuff. I guess I'll just have to go with an average or something. I don't know. (sorry I guess I just told everyone how much I weigh. Oh well.)

Ta ta for now!

Anna Father's Day

Well last week went well. I ate a lot more fruits/veggies than normal and aside from Luke's birthday cake did pretty well. I dropped 4 pounds but when you're doing WW that is typical for a first week so I don't expect that consistently. After that you can expect to lose 1-2 pounds a week but that is a healthy rate of loss.

For my Sunday points I went over by 6 which is actually amazing that I didn't go over by more as we had Father's Day dinner at The Outback. What I usually get there is a 33 point meal! (I only get 22 PER DAY). I ate Norwegian Salmon and veggies. It was really good...I LOVE fish...and it wasn't over-the-top-filling which feels refreshing actually. I only ordered water. When I'm watching my points I generally don't drink anything but water cuz I don't want to waste precious points on drinks...I'd rather spend my points on stuff I can sink my teeth into. I do have Pepsi One or Diet coke from time to time (zero points).

Good luck on week 2!

Mom's Sunday Report

It's really helpful for me when reading your posts to have you I.D. yourself in the title bar. Otherwise I'm scrolling to the end first to find out who's talking. Eventually it usually becomes obvious, but I like to see who you are right from the start. Just a suggestion.

For all the whining I've done, I was surprised to see I lost 2 lbs. Not much, but a start. I struggle with just feeling hungry a lot of the time, so keep the snack and food ideas coming.

Anna, if I have the WW slider it's probably still packed in a box somewhere. Does the WW website have the same info?

Ben- I didn't realize you were going to totally gut your house and start over! Looks like a war zone. Keep the pictures coming.

This blog is a great way to post family communications in addition to health stuff. We need to get Paul started.

Happy Fathers Day

I'm starting out with an omlette, so far so good. We'll see how it goes.

Here is a pic, first of Nikki and me and the paperweight rock she gave me. The next, is Brady with cousin Izzy here at their house. The rest are just random. One of the house at it's greatest stage of destruction - last week.

Saturday's Results

Dave still has the cell phone but he did call with the messages. Here is what I remember:

Anna--met all 23 of her points and earned 4 by doing the elliptical and strength training. Way to go!
**With Weight Watchers when you are adding up the points how do you determine the physical work score exactly?

Ben--Even while traveling came in 60 calories under! He said he had a pretty good week overall.

Amy--I think I came in about even for my calorie intake yesterday. I did not go to bed hungry. So good for me! :)
I also mowed the lawn....does that count for exercise?

I haven't heard from Mom or Emily that I know of anyway. I think Mom is posting herself. Which is good, it's good blogging practice. ;)

Don't forget it's our first weigh in day. I fixed my scale, so now I know for sure how much I weigh. I'm pretty sure I did not lose any weight this week. But I do feel good and lighter instead of full and regretful.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

I'll keep it short

I could be Verbose by I'll spare you.
-Agree that WW points is simpler, a great way to go for Mom.
-Agree that Amy should not go to bed hungry (sounds like you're living in poverty!). Must be doing something wrong during the day...
-I'm out of town and road tripping a lot this weekend. Lots of Truck Stop snacks, etc. It's not pretty.

Let's have weigh-ins on Sundays. DONT REPORT WEIGHT. Just Up 1 or Down 3 or whatever. If anyone is embarrassed at the get go, feel free to conveniently forget until you feel you're in the swing of things with the process.

WW...my verbosity is kickin in now.

Mom, Do you still have the points slider I think I gave to you a while back? If you do, that will help a lot, in fact you'll need it. I don't buy anything that doesn't have the nutritional info on it. For produce I use this page, but it has just about every food on it.
http://quiddity.cc/rachel/diet/wwfoods.htm (it's a lot of pages, you should print it at work)

It might be good to remember that it is generally true that vegetables are zero points and most fruits are 1 point for 1 C. except bananas which are 2 points.

Just so you know, nuts and trail mix are really high in points. I usually avoid them and see them as an indulgence. I know that 1/2 C. of trailmix is about 6 WW points which is the same as a 6" subway turkey sandwich. that's a big diff in quantity. Many yogurts are high in points too because of so many sugars. I buy WW yogurt which is really good and is only 1 point for the whole thing. Granola bars can also be high, I buy Fiber 1 bars which are 2 points each so yogurt and a fiber 1 bar is only 3 points and that's breakfast. There's tons of little WW tricks and products that are good to get you through a day like their cookies and their ice cream bars. (yeah, they're pricey but I'd rather pay the money than struggle with food). And sugar free jello is zero points and those sugar free jello pudding cups are 1 point. Yum. I also get the veggie steamers and they're usually 2-3 points for a whole bag. So one of those and a pudding for lunch is only 4 points. Another trick many WW folks use is to eat less of the main dish at dinner which is usually high in points because of meats and cheeses and to eat more veggies on the side instead. and remember if you do WW, you get your daily total and you get 35 extra points to use throughout the week or to splurge on one day.

and just a thought on the salad "add-ins"...would you miss them if they weren't there? every little bit counts. I don't even miss cheese in my subway sandwiches anymore.

To figure out how many WW points you are allowed this is how:

Female score 2

Male score 8

Nursing Mom score 12

17 - 26 yrs old score 4

27 - 37 score 3

38 - 47 score 2

48 - 58 score 1

over 58 score 0

Enter the first 2 digit of your weight in pounds, example 175 enter 17

Under 5' 1" score 0

5'1" to 5'10" score 1

over 5'10" score 2

What you do all day....

Sitting down at work score 0

Mainly standing score 2

Walking most of the time score 4

Physical work score 6

Total points ______

To do WW, you need to figure out how many points you're allowed, and add up what you eat every day. I usually did it in my head before, but now I have an app on my phone that calculates it right there. I have to say, it's extremely handy at the grocery store. Otherwise, you can write it down on a sheet of paper just as easily.

One last thought...since I have watched what I put in my body very closely I do very little baking. You can still do it but it is definitely an indulgence and it's time consuming to do the math but it is TOTALLY worth it to do the math because like I said before, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER and then you know exactly how bad those things are! :)

btw, the rest of my text just said I earned 4 points on Friday at the gym.

This is Mom on Amy's computer

I may have to switch to the WW point system. Calorie counting is taxing my patience. The lists on the websites recommended by Amy and Anna don't give portion sizes on most things, so it's kind of worthless. ( for example I looked for almonds - it said 615 cal. and 615 cal is also what's listed in the portion size column. I found another site where you input a food item and it does a search and gives the information I want but I don't want to spend time individually inputting each food item and waiting for my computer to find it, then I have to write it down for future reference. I know that somewhere, if I have the patience to keep looking, there's an alpha list of foods , portion sizes and calories calculated for me by some computer nerd.

Soooo...as near as I can tell I went 200 over on Friday, all the time thinking I was way under. here's what I had:

yougurt cup with strawberries and blueberries
granola bar

Cashew chicken wrap ( whole wheat wrap)
orange

Large green salad with a few things added to the veggies (sunflower seeds, craisins, bacon bits) with ranch dressing

approx. 1/4 cup raw almonds
approx. 1 c. trail mix.

Went swimming Friday. Nice visit in the pool with the Jones'.

Amy- you shouldn't go to bed hungry; there has to be a way to stick to your plan without starving yourself. I try to eat dinner late - like 6:30 or 7:00, then a small good snack before bed and I won't feel so hungry .

Sorry guys, Amy must get her verbosity from me.

Friday-Amy

Hey!
I got a text from Anna but Dave has the phone and he's down in Olympia helping his parents pack up to move. He said he saw part of the text and it said that Anna used all her points for Friday. He said the message was a lot longer but hasn't gotten back to me what it said yet. So Anna, if you want to add to that you'll have to do your own post for today.

I haven't gotten anyone else's results so I will go ahead and post mine. I had 1526 calories but Dave brought home this delicious cinnamon bread from work and I had some. I have no idea how many calories were in it. So I'm guessing I went over by a bunch. But I went to bed hungry again. I guess I will just have to get used to that maybe.
I did about 45 mintues of step aerobics yesterday as well.

I found out how to fix my scale. I am going to weigh in in the mornings. I think your weight is most accurate in the morning.

Have we decided on a weigh in day? Maybe Sunday's?

Thursdays Results

Hello. I have results from the following:
Anna: Anna was 3 points under her allowance for Thursday. Way to go! I bet that feels good.
Ben: Ben went over 300 with 1900 calories due to a yummy frozen yogurt treat.
Amy: I went over by 50 calories due to my frozen yogurt treat at Costco. I went to bed starving, though. That's not too fun. But I guess that's the price I pay for splurging with Jaxon.
Mom, I texted you to get your results but I guess you didn't get it. No biggie.

My only concern with doing the calorie results this way is that we won't all have a need to come to the blog every day to check things out. I like reading what everyone has to say, not just me.
Any thoughts about that?

Knowledge is Power

here's a site with tons of lists of calories for different foods. Print what you need and keep in your kitchen if you find that helpful. I've also asked for the nutritional guides at a few fast food places. And if you're going out to eat just google their nutritional info before you go and then you can decide what you're going to order before you even leave the house! (btw, I heard Chipotle is the highest in calories/fat of all the fast food restaurants!)

And look at all of those treats as poison and let someone else eat 'em!

Wednesday and Thursday for Emily

Yesterday went well. I was under by 80 calories. I did end up with a migraine that made me feel nauseas, so, I think that really helped.
Today was pretty good too. I still have 30 calories, but Ben is bringing home Frozen Yogurt. So, TBD.

Amy-Thanks for the snack ideas! I needed that.
Pat-You can find the calorie count for most foods online, even some restaurants. We went to California Pizza Kitchen tonight and we went on their site and it gave the calories for all of their items. We tried this for Cheesecake Factory and they didn't do that. Maybe because they don't want to reveal how high the calories are for their foods.

Mom's first Attempt

Okay, I put my numbers in and it looks like I can have 1825 calories a day; sounds great, but I haven't really started counting yet because I don't have a list of foods and their calorie content. I'll work on finding a good one after I'm out of school. I can use the food packaging info. but that doesn't cover fresh food items like fruit etc. and I'd rather have everything at hand in one place.

Even without counting; I know I've done better for the most part because I'm so aware of what I write down and we all know how we feel when we eat better things vs. crap. Exercise wise, I swam Monday, ellipticized Tuesday, did nothing Wed. ; today's still not over. My goal is 5 times/wk.

Wednesday and today were miserable failures. Staff potluck Wed. and lots of parents have been bringing us office folk gifts and treats - lots of chocolate, donuts, cookies spread out in front of us. I'm lousy with temptation that close. If I fall off the diet wagon and eat something bad, I tend to write off the whole day and think' I'll start again tomorrow.' My life is full of start-again-tomorrows.

Volunteer

I can be the proctor if we want it all in one post. You can get your stats to me whatever way you like.

How many calories do you think are in a Costco Frozen Yogurt Twist? ;)

UPDATE:
It's 390 Calories. I guess that was lunch. Fat free though.

Ben Wednesday

It would be nice to see all in one. One possible way is to have one 'proctor' of the blog and we all email or text/call our stats into that person, and SHE updates it on the blog in one post. Any other ideas?

Wednesday - without going into all the food details, I did very well by only have a Veggie 6" sub for lunch. Total was 50 calories under, at 1550 cal

Anna=Wednesday

I was 4 points under my limit for wed and earned 5 points at a strength training class. yay! feels better than cupcakes did the day before.

is there some way we can all put our daily report in the same post...or just make a reply to one so that they are in the same place? Replying to a post wouldn't really work cuz comments are not visible.

Wednesday's Report--Amy

Another successful day for me. I came in under at 1344 Calories if I'm doing my stuff right.
I had my usual breakfast and lunch and snacks. No need to repeat typing it. And my protein pancakes were pretty good!

EXERCISE: I ran 55 minutes. Probably about five miles

If any one wants to change the background feel free. I was just playing around with it. I won't be offended if you don't like it and change it.

Peace out!

Mom.....Where are you?

Snacks.....

I also don't have a scale yet. I think I just need new batteries for ours. I'll work on that. How come I have the least amount of calories to eat!? It's not fair.

I have a couple snack ideas for people who struggle with snacks like I do. I've put on here my recipe for Trail Corn. It's from the Biggest Loser Family Cookbook. I will put it on again with the exact calories listed. I also have a few more I like that I will mention. Also, I think Biggest Loser has a whole book on snacks. I don't have it, but a friend does. I'll try and borrow it and get some good ones out of there.

Trail Corn

4 cups air popped popcorn (I used jolly times 100 calorie packs)

1/2 cup high fiber, low sugar cereal squares (Quaker Oatmeal Squares)

1/2 cup dried red fruit (cranberries or cherries)

2 tablespoons mini chocolate chips

In assemble line fashion, place 1 cup of popcorn into each of 4 sandwich bags, followed by 2 tablespoons cereal, 2 tablespoons dried fruit, and 1/2 tablespoon chocolate chips. Shake each bag to distribute the ingredients evenly and seal. Eat immediately or transfer the bags to an airtight container and store for up to three days.

**I just store mine on the counter and eat one a day. They keep just fine. The jolly time popcorn makes five cups so I make five bags at a time instead of 4.

Per Serving: 152 Calories, 3 g. protein, 29 g. carbs, 3 g. fat (1 g. saturated) 0 mg cholestorol, 4 g fiber, 37 mg sodium

KIWI-WATERMELON SALSA

1 Cup diced peeled kiwi (about 2 large or 3 small kiwis)

1 Cup diced watermelon

1/3 cup finely chopped red onion

1 Tbsp. finley chopped cilantro

2 tsps. minced seeded jalapeno chille pepper

2 tsps lime juice

pinch of salt to taste.

Per Serving: 23 Calories, trace protein, 5 g. carbs, trace fat (trace saturated) 0 mg cholestorol, less than 1 g. fiber, 17 mg sodium.

**I've made this before and the salsa lasts so you can eat it during a weeks time also. I make pita chips to dip in it. Just get whole wheat pita bread and cut it into small chip size pieces and cook for about 10 minutes or less. It doesn't take long for the bread to crisp up. Pita chips are so good. Also, I skipped the jalapeno pepper. I don't like things too spicy and hot.

Simple snacks I've done are:

apple and a string cheese

yogurt

I hate cottage cheese but some people like it. But you can have cottage cheese with whatever fruit you like.

veggies

any fruit

Celery with peanut butter

Hummus dip with pita chips or veggies

hard boiled eggs w/ orange slices on the side

If you haven't cut out carbs, there is Peanut Butter toast or english muffin

There are millions more. But that's what I can think of for now. Anyone else have some good suggestions?

PANCAKE CHALLENGE:

Ok, here is what I'm having for dinner tonight. I challenge all of you to at least try this recipe. It's not as bad as it looks. Dave even likes them and that's saying something.

Servings: 2

Prep time: 15 minutes

1 cup uncooked whole grain oats (non-instant)

**I've used instant before and it's fine

6 egg whites

1 cup fat free cottage cheese

1/4 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

2 packets sugar substitute

1/2 cup sugar free maple syrup

1/4 cup mixed berries

**I've used regular syrup. I would work you way down to a sugar free or lite syrup. At first you might want the good stuff.

And then I've just used whatever fruit I had at home.

1. Lightly coat a nonstick skillet or griddle with cooking spray; place over medium heat.

2. In a blender, combine oats, egg whites, cottage cheese, vanilla, cinnamon and sugar substitute. Blend on medium speed until smooth, about 1 minute.

3. Pour batter, about 1/4 cup at a time, onto hot skillet. Cook pancake until bubble on top and dry around edges, about 3 minutes. Turn and cook other side until golden brown, about 2 more minutes.

4. While pancakes are cooking, microwave syrup until warm.

5. Place a portion of pancakes on 2 separate plates. Top with warm syrup and mixed berries. Serve and enjoy!

One serving is 3 pancakes.

They are not your normal fluffy pancakes, but much healthier and not all that bad to eat.

If you don't mind I'll keep putting recipes on the blog about once a week. I would like to see some of yours as well!

Thanks!

Tuesday-Emily

I don't have a scale yet so I am guessing my weight, but for now my goal is 1760 calories per day. I was very strict and was under by 90 calories. It was a lot of work and so I hope I can keep this up.
I will say it is VERY helpful and fun doing this with Ben. I also enjoy reading everyone's posts.

Now, I need to find some good snacks. Some where I can actually enjoy instead of just eating like 10 chips. What are some good ones?

Tuesday Ben

Total Calories 1630 (exceeded 'budget' by 20 or so)
Had lots of small snacks and stuff which left me with no room for a reasonable dinner. Lesson learned.
Story: I actually had a restaurant cheeseburger and fries right in front of me and once I discovered it was 1,600 calories, I turned away from it. It was very difficult. I'm proud of myself.

Tuesday's Report

Hello all! And welcome Emily and soon Paul.
Here is my calories for yesterday

Grape nuts
raisins

string cheese

veggies
protein shake

my Trail Corn (150 calories)

Baked Ziti (somewhere around 450 cals)
--I added lean ground meat to it and I ate Owen's small portion. If you follow the exact recipe and eat one portion it's 352 calories.

Some yogurt covered peanuts

Total Calories=1400 calories.

I made up for Monday by going way under. Sweet!

Good luck today!

I just 'granted' everyone 'administration privileges'. this should allow you to change your names and change the colors etc of the blog. It's a total free-for-all.

Birthday Blues

We had Luke's birthday dinner tonight. :( horrible....stupid cupcakes. I was THIRTEEN points over my limit for the day, BUT i earned 10 in the last two days and I have 35 weekly points in addition to my 23 per day...soooo, i have 32 points left of my weekly allowance. tomorrow is a new day. However, tomorrow is Luke's ACTUAL birthday so the festivities are not over yet...but I think the worst is over.

Amy's Monday Eating

I did great until dinner when we went to the Rensink's for BBQ.
I had:

Grape nuts
Raisins
Orange

Veggies, A string cheese

Protein Shake
-strawberries
-banana
-Plain Yogurt Non Fat
-Ice Cubes
-Protein powder

Trail Corn (a recipe I got from a cook book)
-100 Calorie popcorn
-craisins
-dark chocolate chips
-frosted shredded mini wheat cereal (dry)

Cheeseburger
-cheese
-ketsup
Carrots
Grape tomatoes
Strawberries
Dips for both

The cheeseburger put me way over my calories. Lame. I came it at around 1900. :(
I'll do better today

EXERCISE: One hour of step aerobics

Late in the Game.

Hey all, sorry for jumping in so late, but I am in. Honestly, I have been a little reluctant because of the work that goes into counting calories. I think having to count everything I eat, alone, will help me not eat so many snacks! Well, we will see about that.
I just need to figure out my numbers, mainly find a scale, but I will start to log my calories.

Ben's Monday Update

I'm 'allowed 1600 calories per day if I want to lose 2lbs a week.

Monday

Scrambled Eggs
6" Subway with NO mustard, mayo, oil
2 servings Lasagna (784 calories!)
nuts
jelly beans

Total Cal = 1550

days 1 and 2

I am allowed 23 points per day. I went over by 2 points on sunday (stupid haystacks) and stayed within my points on Monday and also earned 5 points with a class at the gym.

Monday, June 14, 2010

A Few Things

I have a few things: Here is my food intake for yesterday Sunday June 13th:
1/2 cup Quaker Granola
1.2 cup skim milk
1 pear

1 String Cheese
2 Whole Wheat Tortillas
Grated Cheddar Cheese
Salsa--about 1/4 cup probably
Veggies (brocolli, carrots, grape tomatoes and snap peas)

Grilled Chicken Breast
Corn
Pork 'n Beans (not the greatest choice)

Dark Chocolate chips
Trader Joes Soy Creamy Mini Chocolate Sandwich (only 90 calories)

My total Calories for the day were around 1490

I need to be in the 1500's or so with the amount of exercise I try to do. So I think I did pretty good.

Also, just a couple tips I thought I'd share
TIP ONE:
When I was doing the Body For Life progam they have one day a week where you can "Cheat" and eat what you want. Don't watch calories or anything. Their idea is that if you totally restrict yourself of things then you are setting yourself up for failure. You have to eat those yummy things sometimes to satisfy your cravings. Don't go overboard on that day, do your best to stick to your healthy foods, but it's ok to go off the "Diet" on that day. That way when you are going through your week and you want something fatty or something it will be easier to wait knowing you have a free day coming up. You don't have to do that, it's just an idea that might help.

TIP #2
I think that writing down what you are PLANNING on eating the night before then you are more likely to stick to that menu and plan for the day. You can check things off as you go and also you don't have to think about what you are going to eat for that day. It's already done. And if it helps you can write down what times you are going to eat also so that you don't find yourself wandering around wanting to eat. If you have a schedule then it's easier to not snack.

Update

Lame about Haystacks.

I finally officially started today. Weighed in at 190 and am watching my food today. I'll be voluntarily reporting daily calories and exercise cuz it's good for me. Just warning you.

Think Twice About Haystacks

I did the math on haystacks and it is not pretty.

1 Can of Cream of Chicken Soup is 150 cal, 8 grams of fat
1 cup of uncooked rice is 600 calories, 0 fat
A chicken breast is 200 calories, 6 grams of fat
Cheese is 110 calories, 9 grams of fat for only 1/3 C.
Pineapple is ok at 70 calories and no fat for a 1/2 C.
Chow mein noodles are 130 calories and 5 grams of fat for 1/2 C.
Coconut is 70 calories and 5 grams of fat for only 2 Tablespoons.

Add it all up and you are looking at about a 600 calorie minimum (that's a medium sized haystack) and 10 grams of fat. In terms of weight watchers...I am allowed 23 points a day and the one I ate tonight was 12 points (without coconut and I didn't use much rice) so that was more than half of my whole day's allowance. NO WAY I could have TWO haystacks!

Some things seem harmless but can be deceiving. And to be honest, they didn't even taste that good.

Official.

Sorry for my lack of follow up since the first post, but from talking to y'all on the phone, it sounds like it's officially underway. I'm not starting till today, but others have started already.

I think it would be good for us to report in regularly with how we're doing on our daily efforts. So, I'll start tomorrow by sharing my list of food and exercise (if I do any). If anyone else wants to chime in, so much the better. Not required, just helpful.

See ya

The Exercise

I guess my 'thing' is the exercise side of weight loss. I like it and I feel good when I'm done. I love a good sweat! In fact I just got done doing an hour of step aerobics! I wanted to just say a few things about what works for me and maybe someone can take something from it. I like to cross-train. I think it's very affective and fun because you are never doing the same thing all the time. As you all know I like to run. I have a running group that helps me stay motivated and we move our location all the time so we run different trails. Another good way to cross train. As much as I would LOVE a gym membership I just can't afford it or do I have the time when Dave is home to go to one. So I have had to use other resources. Of course the outdoors works best, but I also do those lame at home exercise dvd's. I know they are dumb sometimes but they are good to do. There are tons of 'em out there. I have gotten my aerobics ones on ebay. I like step aerobics but there is regular, too if you don't want to do that. You also have to do some strength training to help strengthen and tone the muscles. I have a couple dvd's that focus on that. One of them is only 20 minutes, but very effective. And if you can just get through that 20 minutes, you're good. Anyone can workout for 20 minutes. But I am a firm firm believer in doing both exercise and nutrition for faster weight loss results.
If anyone is interested Dave and I bought p90X and we don't use it right now. It's a REALLY good program but it takes a big commitment. You need at least 1 hour a day for 90 days. It is very intense but so good. But if anyone wants to try it out let me know and I can ship it or something. You just need some free weights, a pull up bar and a yoga mat. (I hate yoga) We did this program for about 3 weeks. If you stick with it you'll look great in 90 days, but we just couldn't find the time. I wanted to work out WITH Dave but he didn't want to get out of bed earlier than he already does and it didn't really work to do it at night. So we were at a loss.
That is my two cents for the day. Hope everyone is excited to get started!

Lets Get This Party Started

OK, so I set up a blog called "Hemmingers" even though we don't all have that name anymore. I just thought it was a good opportunity to snag the blog title while it's available and it is the one name we all are associated with. Anyway...

Once everyone is signed up, lets set some official rules and get started in earnest. Here's a couple questions we can all 'opine' on before we set things in stone:

1. I think it would be motivating and helpful if we all posted DAILY with the amount of calories we consumed the previous day. Tracking intake is essential for real weight loss so we should all be getting the data anyway. Reporting it just insures that we all stay on top of it and can't get away with sneaking 10 spoonfulls of ice cream in the middle of the night without getting publicly shamed. What do we think about this idea?

2. We should each determine our goal calorie intake by putting our info into something like this:
http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

3. Progress will be tracked by % of weight lost (weigh-ins once a week?). No actual lbs will be required.

4. I think there should be a cash prize. What if we each chipped in $20? The winner would get at least $80, probably more if we can get some spouses on baord. It just seems more real when there's at least a little skin in the game. What say ye?

5. Who has other ideas about how this should operate?
